From the 31st May to the 3rd June 2018, De Balie and DutchCulture put on the second Forum on European Culture, looking at the role of artists & thinkers in the future of the European project.
About the debate:
Over the last couple of years, the European project has been shaken to its core, facing crisis after crisis. These crises have all changed perceptions of the EU and we have seen it shift from a positive, post-war project of peace, cooperation and integration into a fragile construction that is under enormous pressure. In 2018, it is even conceivable that there might be a future in which the European project doesn‘t exist at all. What should be done to reverse these developments and keep Europe together in the face of increasing differences and a rising tide of nationalism?
At this crucial juncture in European history, De Balie & DutchCulture have organised the second edition of the Forum on European Culture – Act for Democracy! This year, the forum puts a special focus on the role of artists and thinkers, looking at their role in the creation and defence of the democratic and artistic freedoms that have defined Europe and at the pressure they are now under as these same European values come under attack. What is the power and impact of art and imagination for Europe and how should we act for democracy?
