About the debate:
Tariq Ramadan is one of the most famous thinkers of modern Islam. In his theories he is known for putting the emphasis on the participation and integration of Muslims in Europe.
In his lecture Tariq Ramadan gave a detailed analysis on the subject of the integration of Muslims in Western societies. We heard his response to interesting and important questions, such as: What will the result of the recent democratic revolutions in the Middle East be? Will it change the relationship between the Arabic World and the West and what does it mean for the millions of Muslims living in Europe?
After the lecture Ramadan was interviewed by Iman Lechkar, researcher at the KULeuven and member of the research centre for Interculturalism, Migration and Minorities. Following the interview the audience were also given the opportunity to pose questions, while before Tariq began speaking, Meryem Kanmaz, program coordinator at the expertise centre for Islamic Cultures in Flanders (MANA), gave a short introduction.

Tariq Ramadan: Tariq Ramadan studied philosophy, French literature and social sciences at the University of Geneva before taking up a highly demanding course in classic Arabic studies at the Al Azhar University in Cairo. After his studies he wrote a PhD dissertation on Friedrich Nietzsche (Nietzsche as a historian of philosophy) and is presently a lecturer of contemporary Islamic studies at Oxford University. He is the author of more than 20 books, including Facing our Fears and Radical Reform.
