Alisa Ganieva is a journalist and author, who comes from Dagestan in the south of Russia and is now based in Moscow. She writes about the clash of traditional and modern societies, Islamic insurgencies and the ideological and domestic confusion of the region she grew up in. She published her controversial first novel, Salam Dalgat!, under a male pseudonym, winning the national Дебют prize in 2009. The Mountain and the Wall (Праздничная гора) came out in English in 2015 (Deep Vellum, USA) and Alisa’s latest novel, The Bride and the Bridegroom, will be published in English in 2017. In 2015, the Guardian named Ganieva among Moscow’s thirty most talented young people.
