Petko Kovachev participated in the first Ecoglasnost protests in the late 1980s and has remained a committed activist, participating in other protest actions from 1989 through to the #ДАНСwithme anti-government protest of 2013-2014; the longest anti-government protest in the history of Bulgaria.
Working at the heart of the creation of the Greens and the Green Policy Institute in Bulgaria, Petko was an energy coordinator for the CEE Bankwatch Network for Bulgaria (1997 – 2006). He has also worked on projects looking at alternative energy development in Bulgaria, the future of nuclear energy and how to finance energy efficiency and renewable energy via international financial institutions. Since 1996, he has worked on analysing Bulgaria’s energy strategies.
